Players are generally allowed to gamble outside the game clock but not during Super Bowl business trips. Before the Super Bowl LVIII matchup at Allegiant Stadium, the policy was shared with the teams, players, and the players’ union for their understanding.
Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications, highlighted the implementation of a more stringent rule ahead of the championship game. This rule prohibits players, coaches, and personnel from engaging in any form of gambling activities.
The updated gambling policy, outlined in a memo on September 29, has been shared with teams, players, and the players’ union. As the Super Bowl LVIII approaches on February 11 at Allegiant Stadium, the regulations specific to the Super Bowl are now relevant, and league officials explained them in a video call on Tuesday.

What if the rules are broken?
The reporting doesn’t specify the penalty for Chiefs or 49ers players succumbing to the temptation of casino games. However, the penalty for betting on games is well-defined. First-time offenders betting on non-NFL games face a two-game suspension without pay.
Initial offenders caught betting on NFL games face an indefinite suspension with a minimum of one year. This rule applies to players not affiliated with the 49ers or Chiefs. Considering there’s only one game left to bet on, any wagers made by Chiefs or 49ers players on NFL games would constitute a significant scandal.
Players caught betting on their team’s games can face a minimum two-year suspension. This could lead to a lifetime ban from the NFL and possible legal consequences for involvement in game-fixing.
Each team is housed in distinct hotels situated around 25 miles away from the vibrant Las Vegas Strip. Miller clarified that the intention behind the distance is not primarily to discourage gambling but to offer a secluded and distraction-free setting for the teams to concentrate on their Super Bowl preparations.
NFL’s complicated embrace
These regulations stem from the NFL’s shift in stance on gambling following the 2018 Supreme Court decision that legalized sports betting nationwide. This landmark ruling paved the way for widespread sports betting and created lucrative opportunities for the NFL and its collaborators to boost their financial gains.
The NFL has openly welcomed sports betting and its connection to Las Vegas, facilitating the relocation of the Raiders from Oakland to Nevada.
