Travel Retail Norway Introduces Bitcoin Payments at Oslo Airport

Highlights:

  • Travel Retail Norway introduces Bitcoin payment at Oslo Airport duty-free Click & Collect.
  • The new option adds a digital payment choice while keeping current methods unchanged.
  • Management calls this an early step, planning more digital payment options soon.

Travel Retail Norway (TRN) now accepts Bitcoin at Oslo Airport, offering a new digital payment option for duty-free shoppers. This feature is available for Click & Collect orders placed through the Tax Free Norway website. The retailer runs tax-free and travel stores across Norway’s major airports and confirmed the update in a recent report. The company said this marks a first for airport duty-free shopping.

Bitcoin Payments Made Simple at Oslo Airport

The payment service uses support from Satoshi Consult and runs on the Lightning Network. The system completes payments in Norwegian kroner at checkout. The retailer adds no extra fees. Prices stay in local currency, so customers feel comfortable.

First, customers place a Click & Collect order on the official Tax Free Norway website. Staff prepare the order in advance and hand it over after the customer arrives at Oslo Airport. Next, at the pickup counter, customers choose BTC as the payment method. The screen shows a QR code. The buyer scans it with a Lightning Network wallet. The system confirms the payment within seconds and issues a receipt.

Settlement happens in real time, with amounts converted directly into Norwegian kroner. The retailer confirmed that, for now, the Bitcoin option is available only for Click & Collect orders at Oslo Airport. Other store formats are under review for later inclusion.

"This option currently applies only to Click & Collect upon arrival at Oslo, but TRN is considering expanding to other stores and payment formats."

Management Focuses on Choice and Convenience

Deputy Chief Executive Haakon Dagestad explained the aim behind the new option. He said, “We want to give customers freedom of choice and a simple, secure payment experience. Bitcoin as a payment method is an exciting addition for those who prefer to use digital currencies.”

Dagestad added that the solution serves customers who already prefer digital currency use while keeping existing payment methods unchanged. He repeated that Bitcoin stands as an addition rather than a replacement within the checkout system.

He noted:

“Our mission is to operate and develop Norway’s tax-free stores to help finance Norwegian aviation. We believe this will create a buzz in the Bitcoin community and help put Oslo and Norway on the map as forward-thinking destinations.”

Airport duty-free use is still limited, but digital currency payments already exist in other parts of travel. Some airlines and travel booking platforms accept cryptocurrency for flights and hotel bookings through online services.

Dubai Duty Free is working with digital asset platforms to explore crypto payments at Dubai International Airport. The company plans to test Bitcoin and other digital currencies in the coming year. In Africa, Afrique Duty-Free is also testing similar payment options at its airports. The company aims to become one of the first regional operators to accept cryptocurrency payments.
