Stablecoins Set to Overtake Legacy FX in High-Cost Emerging Market Corridors: Report

Highlights:

  • Stablecoins reduce cross-border payment costs in emerging markets where fees can reach up to 8%.
  • Most transfer costs come from banking infrastructure rather than currency conversion in global payment systems.
  • Stablecoins enable faster dollar transfers with near-zero fees compared to traditional banking methods.

Stablecoins are set to replace costly cross-border payment rails in developing economies, according to a recent report by Delphi Digital. The report identifies high transaction fees in traditional systems as the main driver behind this shift. It shows that sending money to countries such as Argentina and Nigeria can cost up to 8% per transaction. These costs affect individuals and businesses that depend on cross-border payments.

However, most of that cost does not come from currency conversion. The report explains that over 80% of the total fee comes from maintaining banking infrastructure. “Stablecoins are emerging as the cheapest way to move US dollars in emerging economies. They remove layers that make transfers expensive,” Delphi Digital said. This cost structure continues to push users toward cheaper alternatives.

At the same time, users in these regions already rely on digital dollars for everyday transfers. They use them to avoid delays and reduce the cost of sending money. In many cases, users complete transfers for less than a cent. As a result, access to dollar liquidity has improved for both individuals and small businesses.

In addition, stablecoin supply has increased despite weaker activity in the broader crypto market. Data shows that supply rose from $308 billion to $316 billion within one month. This growth reflects continued demand from emerging markets.

Why Legacy FX Systems Struggle Against On-Chain Settlement

Traditional cross-border payments rely on correspondent banking networks to process transactions. Banks maintain foreign accounts and use multiple intermediaries to complete each transfer. This structure increases both the cost and the time required to settle payments. As a result, transactions can take up to three days to complete.

Moreover, each intermediary in the payment chain charges a fee. These fees increase the total cost for users. A standard international transfer can cost between $25 and $60. In contrast, stablecoin transfers settle almost instantly and cost significantly less. This difference highlights the inefficiency of traditional systems.

Most people think FX costs come down to currency risk. The bigger cost is the infrastructure keeping the whole system running.

Banks also hold funds in foreign accounts to manage settlement risk. This capital remains unused during the settlement process. As a result, operational costs increase and efficiency declines. In addition, pricing reflects delays, counterparty exposure, and reconciliation across institutions. “Traditional cross-border settlement runs through correspondent banking networks. Each layer adds cost and extends settlement time,” Delphi Digital said.

The report also compares cost structures across different regions. In developed markets, infrastructure accounts for about 17% of total transaction costs. However, in emerging markets, the figure rises above 80%. “The infrastructure cost per unit often exceeds the cost of currency risk. This pattern appears across emerging market corridors,” the report stated.

Stablecoins Enable Real-Time Settlement but Face Limits

Stablecoins enable users to transact directly on-chain without a pre-funded account. This strategy minimizes the use of intermediaries and eases the flow of payments. Consequently, the users are able to carry out transactions more cheaply and quickly. According to the report, settlement is almost immediate in such systems.

Other platforms have developed token-based systems to conduct cross-border transactions. They burn tokens in one currency and mint similar worth in another. This is done in seconds and dislodges settlement cycles that take days. It also eliminates the necessity of maintaining idle liquidity in various jurisdictions.

In addition, companies are building payment infrastructure around stablecoins. These systems support cross-border payments and merchant transactions. They allow users to move funds at any time without depending on banking hours. “Stablecoin rails eliminate most of what makes these corridors expensive to operate. Settlement happens without pre-funded liquidity,” Delphi Digital said.

However, the report also highlights challenges when funds move between digital systems and traditional finance. Bank transfers still rely on batch processing and fixed schedules. Compliance checks and account access also introduce delays. “Most of the friction lies outside the blockchain. Bank systems and regulations continue to slow down settlement,” the report noted.
