Ripple and Kyobo Life Launch Tokenized Bond Settlement Pilot in Korea

Highlights:
- Ripple and Kyobo Life have launched a test for tokenized government bond settlement in South Korea.
- The project aims to reduce settlement time from two days to near real-time while lowering risk for institutions.
- Kyobo Life joins Ripple to explore blockchain use in traditional finance through secure and regulated systems.
Ripple has announced a partnership with Kyobo Life Insurance, a South Korean life insurance company, on 15 April to test tokenized government bond settlement in the country. The project will run within South Korea’s regulated financial system to test tokenized government bond transactions among institutional participants.
This partnership marks Ripple’s first deal with a major South Korean insurance firm. In addition, it is the first time Kyobo Life Insurance is entering blockchain-based sovereign debt settlement through this partnership.

Ripple will use its Ripple Custody platform to support the holding, transfer, and settlement of tokenized government bonds for financial institutions. Ripple Custody provides bank-grade infrastructure designed for regulated entities such as banks and insurers. The platform combines custody, settlement, and asset management into one integrated system. Ripple Custody allows institutions to hold, transfer, and settle tokenized government bonds securely within a regulated system.
Ripple and Kyobo Life will jointly assess the technical structure and regulatory feasibility of tokenized bond settlement in South Korea. The firms will test how blockchain systems can replace manual bond settlement processes used by Korean financial institutions.
Ripple will rely on XRP Ledger infrastructure to enable transparent and trackable transaction processing for institutional users. On-chain records on XRP Ledger allow institutions to track transactions in real time and reduce errors from manual reconciliation.
Fiona Murray, Managing Director for Asia Pacific at Ripple, said, “Korea’s institutional financial market is at an inflection point. This partnership shows that institutional-grade digital asset infrastructure is already available and ready for use in Korea.”
Faster Settlement and Lower Risk Shape Bond Market Changes
Ripple and Kyobo Life will test faster settlement of South Korean government bonds through blockchain-based processing under this project. Korean government bonds currently follow a two-day settlement cycle across financial institutions. However, the firms will test a system that moves settlement closer to real-time execution using on-chain processing.

Simultaneous on-chain settlement reduces the time between trade execution and ownership transfer for government bond transactions in Korea. The system allows both sides of a transaction to complete at the same time. As a result, institutions can complete transactions faster and reduce operational delays.
A shorter settlement cycle reduces counterparty risk for Korean financial institutions that process high-value government bond trades. It limits exposure during the waiting period between trade execution and settlement completion.
Ripple and Kyobo Life plan to integrate the platform with payment systems, liquidity tools, and treasury operations used by financial institutions. Kyobo Life will also assess stablecoin-based payment rails to support continuous transaction processing.
Ripple and Kyobo Life Launch a Broader Push Into Korea’s Market
Kyobo Life Insurance plays a key role in this project as one of South Korea’s largest holders of long-term government bonds. The insurer holds significant exposure to sovereign debt within Korea’s financial system. Therefore, its involvement gives Ripple direct access to a key segment of the country’s capital markets. The Ripple and Kyobo Life launch enables them to test blockchain-based bond settlement in South Korea’s regulated institutional market.
Ripple has been expanding its presence in South Korea through partnerships with regulated financial institutions and service providers. The company previously partnered with BDACS to support institutional digital asset custody services. It also expanded its reach across major exchanges such as Upbit and Korbit.
Ripple is also expanding into other regions as part of its global strategy. The company recently expanded its services into Brazil to support banks and fintech firms operating in the country.
