Pectra Upgrade Activates on Ethereum with Focus on Scaling and Efficiency

Highlights:

  • The awaited upgrade to Ethereum is finally live, and finality has been confirmed.
  • Pectra enables accounts to act like smart contracts and allows users to pay fees with other tokens.
  • Validator exits now take 13 minutes instead of 13 hours, making operations faster for large stakers.

Ethereum has activated the Pectra upgrade today, during epoch 364032, after an initial delay while the developers awaited further testing results from the Hoodi testnet. Developers confirmed the finality of the network 13 minutes later, at 10:13 am UTC. Coinbase and Binance temporarily paused Ethereum and Layer 2 network withdrawals before the upgrade. Both exchanges assured users that trading services would continue without interruption during the pause.

Binance announced that withdrawals and deposits of ETH would remain suspended until network stability was confirmed.
Coinbase followed the same procedure and stated that all new staking requests would resume after 3:45 am PT. Meanwhile, existing staked assets remained unaffected by the process.

Ethereum developers previously faced issues during testing on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets. Incorrect deposit contract addresses caused chain splits and disrupted finality. To address these problems, the team launched a new testnet named Hoodi, where final testing succeeded before the mainnet deployment.

Ethereum Implements Key Technical Improvements Across Network

Most interestingly, EIP-7702 is unique because it allows externally owned accounts to behave temporarily like smart contracts. Users are able to sign transactions in batches, sponsor gas, and set permissions for applications.

Developers think that the change will simplify UI by lowering the amount of time a user spends repeating the same wallet approval. It will also let users cover transaction fees using tokens other than ETH. Preston Van Loon, an Ethereum Core developer, said Pectra gives the network the foundation to support account abstraction in future versions.

Meanwhile, Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin noted that the Pectra upgrade is a notable upgrade after 16 others. Base developer 0xAw said the proposal gives improved permission control, cuts down extra signature prompts, and offers automation for transactions. However, he added that users still need to be careful, as the upgrade widens the chances of signing malicious transactions.

Nearly 10 years of uninterrupted uptime since day one. 16 flawless upgrades — and this is a big one. Patiently building the foundational substrate for the emerging decentralized global economy and system of the world, ensuring that we adhere to the sacred principles of… https://t.co/Hyq61ao4rR

The Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-7251, moves the staking limit of the validators to 2,048 Ethereum. The initial limit was 32 ETH. That adjustment allows large validators to operate more efficiently. Additionally, Pectra realizes EIP-6110, which is a means for the execution layer to relay new validator deposit data. This means that without block proposers voting on Merkle root summaries, consensus clients no longer depend on them.

This improvement reduces the time required for validator exits. Previously, stakers had to wait 13 hours after beginning the exit process. Now, the wait has dropped to around 13 minutes.

Pectra Upgrade Sets Foundation for Future Ethereum Development

Ethereum has combined elements from the Prague and Electra upgrades into this latest release. Developers stated that the Pectra upgrade supports improved transaction processing and network efficiency. The update includes EIP-7691. The upgrade increases the number of data blobs per block, hence scaling the data availability layer of Ethereum. This change boosts Layer 2 scalability while reducing costs.
