Metaplanet Expands Holdings to 5,000 BTC with 145 Bitcoin Purchase

Japanese investment firm Metaplanet Inc. has reached the significant milestone of 5,000 Bitcoin after acquiring an additional 145 BTC for $13.6 million (¥1.926 billion). According to the X announcement, the firm purchased 145 BTC at $93,327 each (¥13,280,472). CEO Simon Gerovich shared on X, formerly Twitter, that this marks a significant step towards Metaplanet’s goal of becoming one of the world’s top Bitcoin holders. He emphasized the company’s intention to lead the global Bitcoin race from Japan.

Metaplanet has invested $428 million to accumulate 5,000 BTC, with an average purchase price of $85,621 per Bitcoin. Metaplanet has adopted a strategy similar to that of MicroStrategy. It has transitioned its focus from software development to building a Bitcoin-centered treasury approach. The firm uses its unique “BTC Yield” metric to track Bitcoin-per-share growth.

As of 2025, the company has achieved a BTC Yield of 121.1% year-to-date, according to Gerovich. In April alone, the company reported a BTC Yield of 13.0%. Metaplanet’s consistent BTC Yield increases over recent quarters reflect the success of its Bitcoin acquisition strategy. 

Moreover, Metaplanet has been active in capital markets. It issued stock acquisition rights to support its ongoing Bitcoin accumulation. The latest Bitcoin acquisition follows closely after Metaplanet purchased an additional 330 BTC for $28.2 million.

Metaplanet Nears Halfway Point to 10K Bitcoin Target for 2025

Gerovich revealed that the recent Bitcoin purchase puts the Tokyo-based firm closer to its yearly goal. He stated that reaching 5,000 BTC represents the midpoint toward its goal. The company aims to accumulate a total of 10,000 Bitcoin by the end of the year.

Gerovich said:

“In terms of Bitcoin holding growth rate, we are the fastest in the world, and in absolute volume, we are expanding at a pace second only to Strategy Corp. We aim to achieve our target of 10,000 BTC by the end of the year.”

Despite the major Bitcoin purchase, Metaplanet’s stock dropped 4.57%, falling to $2.49, according to Google Finance.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin is priced at $91,963, reflecting a 2.38% decrease. Over the past week and month, BTC has increased by 8% and 6%, respectively. The 24-hour trading volume has fallen to $37.51 billion, showing a 35.31% decrease. Meanwhile, Bitcoin has surpassed Google in market cap, now ranking among the world’s top five assets—above Amazon and silver.
