Ethereum to Retire Holešky Testnet While Fusaka Launch Nears Mainnet

Highlights:

  • Ethereum will move resources to new testnets for stable development.
  • Ethereum is set to retire the Holešky testnet as developers migrate to Hoodi Sepolia and Ephemery for future upgrades.
  • Fusaka will improve rollup efficiency and lower costs while preparing the network for greater scalability.

The Ethereum Foundation announced that it will end the Holešky testnet shortly after the next upgrade comes live in November. Support from client developers, testing teams, and infrastructure providers will stop two weeks after the upgrade is finalized. The Fusaka, the next upgrade, is anticipated for the second half of September, with a mainnet deployment in November.

Holešky went live in September 2023 as Ethereum’s largest public testing environment. It provided a platform for evaluating staking systems and validator performance on a large scale. Developers used it to trial upcoming improvements, including the Dencun upgrade and, more recently, the Pectra update.

The testnet was also useful in testing protocol modifications, though it too met challenges. Holesky experienced inactivity leaks, causing long queues of the exit validators earlier this year. Although the network eventually recovered, the drawn-out exit process created challenges for testing validator lifecycles within reasonable timelines.

Ethereum to Retire Holesky After Two Years of Operation

Ethereum developed the Hoodi testnet in March 2025 to overcome these problems. The foundation has stated that staking operators and infrastructure suppliers would move from Holešky to Hoodi. In addition, Ethereum recommended Sepolia as the preferred testnet for developers working on smart contracts and decentralized applications. Sepolia continues to serve as the main environment for application and tooling tests. For developers focusing on validator lifecycles, Ephemery remains available. Meanwhile, Ephemery resets regularly, offering a lightweight and efficient space for short testing cycles.

Ethereum will consolidate its testing environment to Hoodi, Sepolia, and Ephemery to offer additional stability and performance. The foundation stated that such a structure will prevent problems experienced on Holesky in addition to giving developers a clearer route. The long-term validation testing and protocol upgrades are supposed to be carried out on Hoodi.

The move to retire Holesky and concentrate on three testnets signifies the emphasis of Ethereum on having dependable and well-maintained environments. The shift also guarantees that future changes, such as Fusaka, can be tested without interference, which will provide developers with confidence in their deployment processes.

Next Steps with Fusaka and Beyond

The Fusaka update, which will be implemented in November on the mainnet, is already being developed on Ethereum. In particular, Fusaka presents 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals. These modifications will enhance the accessibility of data to rollups, and they will balance workloads among validators. The change will simplify the operation of the various nodes, enhance decentralization, and facilitate quicker rollup transactions at reduced expenses.

🚀 Why Ethereum's Fusaka Upgrade is a Game-Changer Everyone Will Be Buzzing About! 🚀

The foundation has also set its sights on the Glamsterdam upgrade, planned for 2026. Meanwhile, Glamsterdam is considering a 6-second reduction in block periods from 12 seconds. The proposal would separate block validation from execution to allow provers more time to generate zero-knowledge proofs.

Meanwhile, Ethereum’s progress continues to affect market activity. Several companies have added Ether to their treasuries this year. For instance, Cosmos Health launched a $300 million financing facility to launch a long-term Ethereum treasury.
