Circle Unveils Post-Quantum Security Roadmap for Arc Network

Highlights:

  • Circle says Arc will launch with post-quantum signatures to protect wallets from future quantum threats.
  • The roadmap also covers private transactions, validators, and infrastructure across the broader Arc network.
  • Circle is using an opt-in approach so developers and institutions can upgrade gradually.

Circle has shared a new security roadmap for Arc Network, saying the blockchain network is being built with post-quantum protection in mind from the start. In a blog post published on 2 April, the company said Arc’s mainnet will launch with support for post-quantum signatures. That would give users a way to create wallets designed for stronger long-term protection as quantum computing develops.

Circle said the plan is meant to cover not only wallets, but also private transactions, validators, and the wider infrastructure around the network.

Circle Prepares Arc for Future Quantum Threats

The stablecoin described the move as an early step to prepare for a future moment often called “Q-Day.” This is the point when powerful quantum computers could break the public-key cryptography that blockchains use today.

The company said this risk could affect the digital signatures that protect wallets, approve transactions, and verify network participants. It also warned about a “harvest now, decrypt later” threat. In this type of attack, bad actors collect encrypted data today and try to break it in the future when stronger technology becomes available.

Arc’s Step-by-Step Protection Plan

Under the roadmap, Arc’s first step is to add post-quantum signature support when the mainnet goes live. Circle said this will give users and businesses a practical way to create quantum-resistant wallets from the start, instead of adding that protection later.

The company also said the feature will be optional. This means Arc will not require every wallet, contract, or software system to switch right away. Instead, it will provide a flexible path so the ecosystem can adapt over time.

After mainnet, Arc will also extend quantum protection to private states. Circle said this is important because many institutions need confidential transactions and private balances. Without post-quantum encryption, that sensitive data could face risks in the future.

The company added that Arc’s privacy features are being designed with quantum resistance in mind from the beginning. These features will place extra encryption layers around public keys and key material to help protect long-term confidentiality.

The next phase will focus on infrastructure. Circle said security depends on more than just the blockchain itself. Cloud systems, hardware security modules, and data pipelines also need post-quantum upgrades. The company added that Arc’s infrastructure roadmap follows wider industry changes, including the use of post-quantum algorithms in TLS 1.3. This is meant to help keep the entire system secure.

In the final phase, Arc plans to strengthen validator authentication with post-quantum signatures. However, Circle said this step needs careful testing. These signatures are larger and require more computing power.

On the other hand, the design for the consensus system used by Arc allows blocks to be finalized within less than one second. This leaves only very little time for the attacker to exploit any vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, Arc mentioned that its validators would only undergo upgrading once everything was completely prepared.

Arc Gives Institutions a Simple Path to Stronger Security

Arc’s phased plan gives institutions a practical way to move forward. They can start protecting new assets now and make deeper upgrades over time. The opt-in model also reduces disruption. As a result, developers get more flexibility, while users get more confidence.

Quantum computing is still developing, and no one knows exactly when Q-Day will arrive. However, waiting for complete certainty also brings risk. The goal of Circle and Arc is to be prepared for any potential risks in advance.

Google’s latest research adds support to Circle’s move. In a paper published on 31 March, the researchers said quantum computers may break the cryptography used by Bitcoin and other blockchain networks sooner than expected.
