Buterin Reaffirms That Ethereum Is Neutral Amid Growing Ecosystem Debate

Highlights:

  • Ethereum is neutral at the protocol level and does not require ideological alignment.
  • Buterin says criticism is not censorship, and builders cannot be shut down.
  • He warns that AI development must protect human control and core Ethereum values.

Vitalik Buterin addressed the growing debate around Ethereum’s direction in a recent post on X. He said users do not need to agree with his personal views to use the network. He stressed that Ethereum operates as neutral infrastructure. Builders can deploy applications without asking for approval from him or the Ethereum Foundation.

“I do not claim to represent the whole Ethereum ecosystem,” he wrote. He explained that neutrality belongs to the protocol itself. Individuals inside the ecosystem remain free to hold strong opinions. He said Ethereum does not require ideological alignment for participation.

Buterin disagreed with the requirement that influential people need to keep a low profile. He noted that he can attack applications that he feels violate fundamental principles. Nevertheless, he admitted that he is not able to delete such applications on the blockchain. The protocol, he observed, does not give him that authority.

He explained this system as a more general free speech balance. Once an application runs on Ethereum, it cannot be closed down by anyone. Meanwhile, anyone is allowed to contest ideas in a public fashion. He positioned that tension as the focal point of how open systems operate.

Ethereum Is Neutral And No One Needs Approval To Build Or Speak

Buterin addressed accusations that public criticism amounts to censorship. He responded directly to that claim, saying, “If I say that your application is corposlop, I am not ‘censoring’ you. This has always been the flip side of the grand bargain of free speech: I am not free to shut you down, but I am free to criticize you, much as you are free to criticize me.”

He said the protocol does not filter applications based on politics or ideology. Instead, it allows competing visions to operate on the same network. The builders also have access despite personal differences. He stressed that at the bottom level, a neutral state is applicable.

The remarks follow as debates deepen on commercialization and ecosystem values. Some developers have expressed concerns regarding the change of priorities. Buterin insisted that open participation is not lost. He said the infrastructure does not enforce one worldview.

In a recent update, he discussed the link between Ethereum and artificial intelligence. He said many people treat AI and crypto as separate worlds. However, he believes they should evolve together. Buterin warned that AI must not chase speed alone.

Two years ago, I wrote this post on the possible areas that I see for ethereum + AI intersections: https://t.co/ds9mLnrJWm

He also described Ethereum as global and decentralized while remaining institutionally compatible. He cited Linux and BitTorrent as systems that influenced this approach. Both support open participation while powering large infrastructure. He said Ethereum can host emerging technologies without restricting access.

Shared Values Still Influence What Gets Built On The Base Layer

Despite defending neutrality, Buterin said values still influence technology decisions. Developers who prioritize privacy will design tools differently, while others will be adopted by those who are efficiency-oriented or profit-oriented. Buterin claimed that technology cannot exist without its social influence. He cautioned that decades of design erosion undermined privacy and user control. He attributed those shifts to the mainstream adoption efforts of Ethereum. In his opinion, the network fell behind on self-sovereignty and distrust.

In a related event, Buterin predicted that 2026 would become a turning point in reinstating those principles. He encouraged developers to revert to user control and core values. He positioned that transition as a requirement to the long-term direction of Ethereum.
