Binance Labs Rebrands to YZi Labs as CZ Expands Investment Strategy

Binance Labs has rebranded to YZi Labs, which means it is disassociated from Binance branding. The announcement marks a clear shift away from focusing only on blockchain, with investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and biotechnology.

This change is accompanied by changes in the firm’s leadership. Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, will maintain his involvement in the company by helping and offering his advice and support in investment choices. The new venture is to be spearheaded by Ella Zhang, who previously was the head of Binance Labs. She has also managed investments in big projects such as Polygon, Injective Protocol, and CertiK.

The rebranding is a result of YZi Labs’ new direction as an independent company. The firm plans to invest in nascent projects with future Web3, AI, and biotech growth prospects anchored on innovation. However, the company will continue to focus on blockchain-based projects, such as its incubation programs and the BNB Chain Most Valuable Builder (MVB) initiative.

Strategic Investment Shift and Leadership Transition

YZi Labs will prioritize three investment areas: Web3, Artificial Intelligence, and Biotechnology. The company plans to distribute the funds among these sectors, with priority given to startups based on blockchain technology. It will offer capital, experience, and advice.

CZ will not be limited to monitoring the investment. He will actively advise startup founders and be a member of the investment committee. Zhang will manage operations for the company, which is in line with her extensive experience in venture capital and technology investments.

To further its ambitions of empowering founders, YZi Labs will reintroduce an on-site incubation program. The initiative also comprises a 12-week residency aimed at encouraging collaboration, mentorship, and learning. In addition, the firm will offer active assistance to startups involved in Web3 and other new technologies.

Family Office and Future Investment Plans

The rebranding comes as YZi Labs transforms into a family office investment holding company. Apart from venture capital, the firm will also oversee the wealth of Binance co-founder Yi, with whom CZ has three children. Despite the reorganization, YZi Labs remains well funded with more than $10 billion in crypto assets under management.

The firm does not have an official headquarters and works remotely with the current team of nine employees, which is expected to grow to twenty employees. YZi Labs will provide capital ranging from $500,000 up to $50 million for early-stage companies with the potential for fast growth.

Apart from crypto, the firm plans to venture into AI and biotech sectors. It is in the process of hiring specialists in these areas in order to enhance its investment capabilities. Zhang stated that YZi Labs will focus on how AI and biotech can bring positive changes while remaining a blockchain company.

Continuity and Long-Term Growth Prospects

YZi Labs has assured existing portfolio companies that all the ongoing projects and partnerships will remain affected. The transition intends to expand investment flexibility while maintaining its main purpose of backing disruptive innovations.

Binance Labs has previously invested in hundreds of projects, including Sky Mavis, Aptos Labs, and The Sandbox. Its portfolio is dominated by tokens of the projects it funded, with a total worth of over $10 billion. The firm’s asset base places it superior to other leading crypto investment firms such as a16z Crypto and Polychain Capital.
