Authorities said the crypto theft investigation began in November last year after a 29-year-old man reported unauthorized access to his crypto account. Investigators alleged that Merrin used deceptive means to access and transfer the digital funds without permission. Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District and the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad coordinated the arrest operation.

Regulations on crypto ATMs have also been tightened since government officials discovered that they were being used in fraud and illicit transfer of money. The new legislation provides AUSTRAC with greater authority to control these machines.
