Community Pushback Against the Proposal

Residents of Vilonia expressed their concerns during public meetings for several weeks. They said that the proposed facility will affect the town’s peaceful atmosphere. Some of the residents expressed that the presence of mining activities poses threat of noise pollution that may disrupt normal way of life. Besides, concerns were raised about how infrastructure as power and internet might be stretched to meet needs of this facility.

One community member said, “A simple question I would like to ask, like, did we make a mistake deciding to relocate here.” She emphasized that Vilonia was preferred for its calm and natural surroundings. According to the residents, the city could turn into a center of activities linked to cryptocurrencies, altering its nature and local resources.

Ongoing Debate on Crypto Mining in Arkansas

Although most people in Vilonia remain skeptical of crypto mining, there are still individuals who insist on the importance of the industry. Interstate Holdings Blockchain CEO Steve Landers Jr. opined that the establishment of mining facility would not pose a threat to the infrastructure. He also stated that it would raise no issues of noise, energy, or Internet consumption.

However, a considerable number of people within the community could not agree with these remarks. To them, the need for the preservation of the peaceful atmosphere for the town was paramount than any potential benefits that mining would bring.

Interstate Holdings Blockchain, involved in the Arkansas Blockchain Council, also views the proposal as an investment. For instance, such projects could attract a lot of financial investments, according to Ben Smith, president of the Arkansas Blockchain Council. Smith also opined that such a project could involve an investment of up to $14 million and would have a positive impact on the community in the long run.

The town strongly resisted these arguments. Such developments, however, remain unwelcome to the community members, who think that they are incompatible with the rural lifestyle in Vilonia.

Broader Resistance to Crypto Mining in the U.S.

Vilonia’s decision to reject the crypto-mining proposal is not unique, as several other states in the US have also done the same.
